Wang Wenjiao, the pioneering figure of Chinese badminton, passed away in the early hours of Sunday 25 December 2022, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy.

王宝教原名王宝高(Ong Boen Kao)，出生于印度尼西亚梭罗，是一名很有前途的运动员。1953年，王宝教被邀请到中国，帮助激发人们对羽毛球的兴趣。一年后，他永久定居中国，从零开始创建了一个令全世界羡慕的项目。一次严重的背部损伤使他把工作重心完全转移到执教上，中国很快就涌现出了一波又一波优秀的球员，从侯家昌、汤仙虎、陈玉娘等人开始。

Born in Solo, Indonesia, as Ong Boen Kao, Wang was a promising player and was invited to China in 1953 to help stimulate interest in badminton. A year later, he would relocate permanently to China, and from scratch would build a programme that became the envy of the world. A serious back injury caused him to shift his focus entirely to coaching, and China soon produced wave after wave of exceptional players, starting with the likes of Hou Jiachang, Tang Xianhu, Chen Yu Niang and others.

Leading the team on friendly tours in Denmark (1965) and England (1973), Wang demonstrated the effectiveness of his training methods, with the Chinese consistently getting the better of their opponents. Even more impressively, China caused a sensation by winning the Thomas Cup in 1982 on their maiden attempt, beating Indonesia 5-4 in the final.

After his retirement as head coach for 21 years, Wang contributed extensively to the worldwide development of badminton. As member of IBF’s Development Council from 1984 to 1996, his opinion was much sought.

“He was willing to share his wisdom and to talk openly about his methods, which was not always the case for coaches those days,” notes Torsten Berg, his fellow-Council member from those days, in his foreword to his biography. “Wang Wenjiao’s smile and calm diplomacy helped us to find common ground – and laugh over our differences… Wang Wenjiao also served on the IBF Committees, looking after the calendar and our major events, establishing Olympic Qualification Regulations, etc. His contribution, in his own quiet way, was also important and significant.”

王文教于2015年获得世界羽联终身成就奖，并于2019年获得中国“人民楷模”国家荣誉称号。

Wang Wenjiao was honoured with BWF’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and with the national honour of ‘People’s Role Model’ in 2019.
